Tips for Avoiding a Septic Tank Backup

At Cornish Burton Sigala Septic Services, our team of workers provide people with septic cleaning services and septic pumping services. Over the years, we have seen a lot of recurring issues when it comes to septic tank backups, so we decided to give everyone some tips to avoid septic tank backups. If you follow these few tips, you are much less likely to need septic pumping services.

There is no such thing as a “flushable” wipe - There are companies out there that have labeled their wipes as flushable, but they definitely are not flushable. Any wipe you flush is going to cause issues with your septic system, so as tempting as it may be to flush a dirty makeup wipe don't do it. If you flush any kind of wipes you are likely to end up paying a good amount of money to fix your septic tank.

Never put grease down the drain - A very common thing that people do that causes a septic tank to backup is pour grease down the drain. This is a recipe for disaster, you never want to put even a small amount of grease down the drain, always throw it out. If you put grease down the drain, it messes with the balance of good bacteria in your septic tank and your septic tank will no longer be able to properly break down solid waste.

Avoid using a garbage disposal - It may seem like the food you throw down the garbage disposal disappears, but it doesn’t. The garbage disposal actually allows chunks of food to get into the septic system. The build up of food in a septic tank will cause many issues, just like wipes and grease. Avoid the garbage disposal and you will also avoid needing to pay a bunch of money to fix your septic system.
