Owning
a septic tank can require a lot of work, but with proper maintenance, you can
save on expensive repairs by following these Do’s and Don’ts of Septic System
Maintenance.
- DO
Regulate washing machine water. It is important to regulate and filter washing
machine water because it can contain lint. Over time the lint can build up and
clog pipes causing severe damages. It is recommended to but a cheap lint filter
at any hardware store to prevent the lint from entering your septic system.
- DON’T
Use a garbage disposal. The bacteria in a septic tank will not be able to
decompose the food that is put through a garbage disposal and can cause a
backup. It is recommended to throw all food in the garbage to prevent needing
septic cleaning service. Grease and oil should also be avoided from being put
down the sink.
- DO
Regulate water use during parties. If you are expecting a large number of
guests to use the restroom, it is recommended to lower the fill line in the
toilets to prevent overfilling your septic tank. If the tank overflows, you
will not be able to flush the toilets during the party without septic pumping
service.
- DON’T
Build or drive on top of your septic tank. It is important to know the exact
location of your septic tank because you do not want to build or drive on top
of it. With all the small plastic pipes, added weight can crack them and cause
needed repair. The leach field also needs oxygen to work properly and cannot be
covered.
